Shannon + Beau

by | Dec 2017 | Story

Breed Quarter Horse

Age 10

Sex Gelding

Color Chestnut

Height 14.2hh

Beau was brought in to rescue in mid-July 2016 and came to the rescue barn where I volunteer. There was something “special” about him and we clicked quickly. Prior to rescue, Beau was a herd stallion running with his mares, foals and a few donkeys on 300 acres. Some of the horses in the herd were truly feral, but Beau was not. I was told, after I had adopted him, that he had been a bottle baby as a foal and that this was the reason he was not feral. Shortly following his rescue, Beau was gelded and became infected/abscessed. This was treated with surgery by equine specialists and I spent time taking care of him during his recovery.

Once he recovered from the gelding, we began working on training together. I had not been in a saddle for 20+ years when I adopted Beau. In the past year, we have both learned how to be a better partnership, and we continue to grow with each month of training that passes. I ride Beau both in English and Western tack. Western is something entirely new to me as I had always ridden in English tack before Beau. We now go back and forth, and have even been to two fun shows, one obstacle challenge and one horsemanship clinic, as we continue working to build our relationship.

What #RightHorse means to me

Beau is the Right Horse for me because he is a gentle horse that is willing to learn what it is to be an equine partner from the very beginning. He was previously untrained, so he and I have spent the past year building our skill set and partnership together.
